Swim Meet 101
Here you will find answers to many of the questions parents may already have. We hope this information helps put your mind at ease. If you need assistance at any time, please don’t hesitate to contact a coach or committee volunteer — we are here to help.
Let’s have some fun! 🏊♂️🎉
What does my swimmer need to be prepared for the meet?
- Come dressed in their team suit with their events on their arm. If your swimmer was not at Thursday practice, have them see a coach when they arrive at meet check in for their events.
- Dress up for the team theme!!!!
- Goggles, team cap and towel
- Water/sports drink and bag of your favorite snacks
- Money for concessions to support the other teams fundraising efforts
- Sunscreen & bug spray (if applicable). So not put sun screen on your events on your arm. It will smear ;-)
What additional items does my swimmer need in their swim bag?
- A blanket or extra towel for your swimmer to sit on. A chair if they do not like to sit on the ground.
- A sharpie in case there are any last-minute changes to your child's events
- MORE Snacks! Meets can take a while and we want to make sure your swimmer has snacks available during the meet!
- Games, books, and other entertainment. There can sometimes be a lull between events for your swimmer and we don't want them to get bored!
Parent Reminders:
- Bring tailgate style chairs, a small cooler with water & concession money.
- Bullpens are for the athletes. Parents may not sit in bullpens due to limited space. Parents can find space on the pool deck and bullpen volunteers will be responsible for the athletes getting to and from the blocks and for relays.
- Have your swimmer rested and well hydrated!
- Have your swimmers check in with the coaches as soon as they arrive and parents please check in at the volunteer table.
General Timeline:
- Check-in is typically between 3:45-4:45pm depending on home or away meets. Please check emails sent from the coaches for all details.
- Mini Piranhas swim at home meets at approximately 5:15 depending on the meet and the referee. Mini Piranhas do not travel.
- All meets, home or away, start at 5:30 PM.
How to Read Your Swimmer's Arm:
ARM WRITING CODE
All swimmers will have their events written on their arm the morning of the swim meet. If all parents understand the arm writing code, they can make sure their children make it to their assigned events. This is an example of how it will look on your child’s arm:
E H L
“E” is the event number .“H” is the heat number. “L” is the lane number.
A (#) after the lane number equates to the position that the swimmer goes in the relay--first, second, third, or fourth into the water. In a relay, “BK” means they swim the back stroke, “BR” means they swim breast stroke, “FR” means they swim freestyle, and “FLY” means they swim butterfly.
In the example, the swimmer is swimming the first event (event #1) in the second heat (or race) in lane 6. The child is the second swimmer. The child’s next event is #12 in heat 1 and lane 2. The child is swimming breast stroke. At each meet, a flipchart or digital sign will show the current event number. Additionally, the announcer will announce events as they occur.
